President’s Message

From James Harris
President NJ State Conference of the NAACP

Welcome to the website for the New Jersey State Conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NJSC–NAACP).

I am delighted and proud to greet you on behalf of the 40 local branches, one Prison Branch, 7 college chapters, and 15 youth councils that are located throughout the state from Cape May County to Bergen County.

The volunteers of the oldest and largest civil rights organization in the world are committed to the mission of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) stated in the constitution that governs all units of NAACP: “The principle objectives of the Association shall be to ensure the political, educational, social and economics equality of all citizens of the United States, to remove all barriers of racial discrimination through democratic processes: to seek enactment and enforcement of federal, state, local laws securing civil rights: to inform the public of the adverse effects of racial discrimination and to seek its elimination; to educate persons as the their constitutional rights and to take all lawful action to secure the exercise thereof, and to take any other lawful action in the furtherance of these objectives, consistent with the NAACP’s Articles of Incorporation and this Constitution”.

As we approach the 100th anniversary of the NAACP (1909-2009), the leadership of the NJSC–NAACP is planning bold demonstrations of our commitment to this mission, and seeks to raise the political and economic investment in the communities, people, and institutions that serve people of African ancestry and other minorities in New Jersey. The NJSC–NAACP is working to ensure that people of color are not taken for granted, neglected, or abused by anyone regardless of race.

The lifeblood of the NJSC–NAACP is membership, personal commitment, and dedication. Freedom is not free because it requires the consistent pressure and resources of individuals and groups that understand that power is never given; it must be seized by individuals who have the vision, persistence, and focus to complete assigned tasks. I invite each of you to utilize your talents, skills, and resources by joining and working with your local unit of the NAACP. I invite you join the NAACP and help us demand change in the interest of civil rights, justice, and equality today.

I am committed to moving the NJSC–NAACP to the next level by recruiting and retaining more young adults, many whom have grown up without the benefits of having been involved in the direct action activities of the civil rights movement of the 50s, 60s, and 70s such as mass protests civil disobedience and mass rallies. Through the collective efforts of the older generations and young people, the NJSC–NAACP will continue to be the only advocate working to improve the quality of life for African Americans and other minority groups in New Jersey.

Finally, the NJSC–NAACP seeks partnerships and alliances with religious and other organizations that share the vision, values, and objectives of the NAACP.

With God’s guidance and blessings, and the support of the members of the officers, leaders, and members of the NAACP, we will continue to unite for equality and upliftment.

Please join a local Branch of the NAACP today.
